This the first album review from ‘For the Love of Music’, it’s also the first time we have been given a CD from an artist who has played at one of our events since we have kicked off in London.

So Pete Leonard’s “Headlights” album has been placed in the digital disc player and span up, although the music feels like it should be heard on a 12” vinyl with background noises adding to vibe given. A very natural and deceptively simple blues & folk sound greeted me as Pete’s confident vocals cut through the silence, with picture painting lyrics such as: “Walk on down to the harbour, find an old man there, sitting next to this old beaten ship, I do despair, say hey Mr. can I get a… on for a ride, says course you can my son”.

With self announced influences such as Skip James, John Lee Hooker with a love of avant-garde electronica and experimental production which have formed live performances that range from pure archetypal blues maestro to an Aphex Twin-esque musical explorer.

The personal favourite tracks are Big Right Foot, Way on Down and Harmonica which has little lyrics other than initial direction to pretend you’re on a train…really liking the way the album takes you on a musical journey and a demonstration of many instruments; however it comfortably finishes in the style it started with the clever string work in W.T.G.T.C.B; but don’t be left thinking ‘What the hell your gonna do’ now, keep waiting for the secret track that is accompanied by drums to give a well paced uplifting end!

From looking at Pete’s myspace gigs he mainly performs around the Salisbury area; however we managed to get him to Clapham and hope he visits us again for a future ‘For the Love of Music’ gig.

For the Love of Music’s first London show started on a great note with excellent performances from all the musicians. The vibe was excellent, one punter describing it as very bohemian, which is exactly what For the Love of Music is about.

Kicking off the night was Richard Soward accompanied by Rowland O’Connor, together formally known as Lucid Oak. They jammed out some vintage covers and originals including James Browns ‘I Feel Good’, they are great musicians who have performed regularly across London and even the world! We look forward to hearing them play at a future gig.

Second on was bluesy folk artist Pete Leonard on a road trip from Salisbury, Wiltshire to perform. His unique brand of music is mesmerizing and very accomplished. Halfway into his set he brandished a harmonica ensuing a clap along from the crowd.

On third was local Brixtonian Simon Garrard who performed a great set. His alternative folk and Frank Turner esque powerful style of acoustic music gave the night an upbeat feel and his raw emotional vocals accompanied it perfectly. Simon will definetly be performing again at a FLOM production.

Next up was Taylor playing a short but sweet set with funky vibes accompanied with his loop pedal which impressed members of the audience. His retro grooves and lyrical content worked well in the surroundings of the retro vintage clothing store which was the venue.

Headlining the evening was Strangely Famous headed by Craig Davidson a three piece act including Robin Lawrence on bass and Richard Soward on percussion who performed their well polished original songs. They were great and had everyone singing along to the famous ‘Valerie’ at the end of their set.

We would like the thank everyone that was involved in the evening it was a brilliant gig and we look forward to future musical events and strengthening the community of music lovers.

SO FLOM HQ’s new home is in the up and coming area of Clapham in South West London. A trendy area which has seen much development over the past ten years. It is fitting then that as this area develops, ‘For the Love of Music’ adds to the mix and is taking the opportunity to add a fresh and innovative touch to the local music scene. With several venues already offering occasional music evenings it is a good starting point to take live music to the next level. Venues in the area include ‘Arch 365′, a cosy bar hidden away under the railway arches close to Clapham North station offering live band and open mic nights. Also nearby is the Clapham North pub which has weekend acoustic lounge sessions. Stay tuned for further indepth blogs on a variety of these venues.

FLOM would like to introduce you to The Rose Gale Trust, a charity organisation set up in the south of England to help support and provide meaningful grants to young people. It is in honour and memory of Rose Gale a wonderful lady who worked with, supported and inspired very many young people during her life. We were very privildge to have met her and worked with her ourselves at Bass Connection in Salisbury, an organisation set up to house and encourage local young musicians.

The ideas of the Rose Gale Trusts are the following:

developing skills and experience

getting training and education

needing help in a crisis

helping others

having great ideas

A source of funding for this charity includes a variety of musical events which are organised around the Salisbury area, a few events have already taken place, but more are being planned for September 2010, so make sure you check out the website for further details of this. You can also donate directly to them and also contact them if you have any marvellous ideas which may help them out.

FLOM HQ has now moved to London, the big smoke, the land of opportunity! We realise we have been extremely quiet over the last few months, and this is justifiable with the pressures of such a big move, but do not fear as we are still here, and ready to bombard you with more musical developments. We are dividing our time between London and the South West of England to gain more scope on the music industry and also hopefully create a platform for many young unsigned artists looking to step, creep or leap into the London Music scene (or visa-versa).

We are also looking to provide you our loyal followers with more services and amenities on this website. Here are a few things in the developmental pipeline:

*Band interviews *Band Videos *Ticket purchasing *More Musical Podcasts + More Video Podcasts *Expanded Band Database *MP3 Downloads

We hope you continue to follow our journey, we are counting on you!
